Back to School the“stress-less” edition

Back to school

Heading back to school?

Time to switch gears to the “stress-less” edition!

It's that time of year again, folks! The school bells are ready to ring, and we are here to assist in making this year run more smoothly with some helpful tips, tricks, and reminders.

Heading back to school is like a rollercoaster ride - thrilling but can also be a bit of a stress-fest. Let's map it out so you can not only feel like a champ but stay in tip-top shape.

  1. Game Plan: As the back-to-school whirlwind kicks in, make sure to whip up healthy meals and plan ahead for the crazy schedules.

  2. Vitamin Boost: Load up on those fruits a few weeks before school kicks off to give your immune system an extra oomph. Vitamin C is like a quick fix, so munch on those fruits daily!

  3. If fruit isn't your jam (keep trying!), throw in a multivitamin rich in Vitamin C. How about sneaking in all the good stuff into a smoothie? (recipe time!)

  4. Back-to-school jabs and check-ups - tick off that paperwork for sports and class attendance. Don't forget those 4-year-old and 11-year-old booster shots!

  5. Pack a lunch that screams "healthy" or guide them on picking the best from the school menu. Here's a link to Dr. Yum for some lunch-packing genius.

  6. Scope out the menu ahead of time. Most schools dish out their menu in advance. Scanning it early helps the kids make smarter choices and preps you for the days they want to bring their own grub.

  7. Study the class and school schedule. Keep the kiddos on track with a shared calendar that everyone can update. No more last-minute surprises about events or projects! (there is an app for that: try Cozi, Family Wall, and your Google calendar)

  8. Back to school with special health needs: Allergy and asthma champs, stick to your plan and restart the preventive meds two weeks before the bell rings. Missed it? No sweat! Start now. Stock up on school essentials like inhalers, epi-pens, seizure meds, and emergency action plans.

Ready, set, school! Let's make this year a smooth sail!

Prepare yourself for the sports season.

Sports are one of the most rewarding things your kids can be involved in, but it sure will keep you busy. Here are a few things to remember:

  1. Sports Alert: Most middle schools and up will need forms for playing school sports. Check with your kids in advance before school starts for what sport they might want to play this year so they don't miss out due to missing paperwork.

  2. Sports EKG - a smart move for a simple screening. It's not mandatory yet, but worth a shot every 2 years as your child grows. Check out the nonprofit who we play for for free or low-cost EKGs near you.

Stay tuned for my Blog next month on how to survive the busy sports nights, but until then- our Fuel your athlete program can help with some ways to help you athlete thrive by supporting their nutrition.  Review some guidelines and tools here:  https://happen365.org/fuel-your-athlete
