Eating Habits 2yrs-5yrs

Nutritional Needs

Drinks

  • Once your little one turns 2 years old, you can transition to low fat or skim milk (or a milk alternative if allergic) unless your doctor states otherwise.

    • Cow’s milk (low fat/skim) for 2yrs-5yrs: 16-24oz/day

  • Continue to offer water.

    • Water intake for 2yrs-5yrs: 8-40oz/day

  • Avoid juice and other sugary needs.

Foods

  • Nutritional needs are divided between 3 meals and 1-2 snacks per day.

    • Caloric needs range from 1,000 - 1,600/day depending on growth and activity level.

  • Your child’s serving size should be approximately 1/4 of an adult size serving. As your child grows, it is important to let them decide how much they want to eat.

  • They require the same basic nutrition groups as an adult: Grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, protein, legumes.

  • Do not restrict fats, just make sure you are offering healthy fats.

  • For some children, picky eating is a thing of the past or is on its way out, but for others, it is still an issue. The most important thing for parents to monitor is their child's overall growth, not the quantity of food they consume at each meal.

  • Don’t expect your child to clean their plate.

  • Develop a routine with regular meal times and snack times.

    • Sit together for meal times.

  • Eliminate screen time during meal time.

Cooking with your kids is a great way to inspire them to try different foods.

  • Get them involved: Let children participate in choosing and preparing food.

  • Focus on nutrition: Teach them how to make healthy choices by explaining how to select foods based on their nutritional benefits.

  • Model good behavior: Be a role model by eating a variety of healthy foods yourself.
