Kicking off your new habits strong: What exactly is a detox and how can it benefit you?

Kick-off the your new habits with a detox from unhealthy foods.  The idea is to make it as simple as possible. Do it as a family or find a friend who is also motivated for change right now.

One month detox plan below:

Week 1: Clean out the junk food. Remove obvious sugar from your diet and drink more water.

Week 2: Continue prior goals and add a new routine - walk for a few minutes every day. (Create a healthy habit- Adds Vitamin D, fresh air, and some cardio)

Week 3: Get specific, start tracking:

  1. limit sugar and carbohydrates to less than 100 grams per day.

  2. Water goal= (½ your body weight in ounces)  . Read this prior blog for some more water tips.

  3. Start tracking:  keep track (outside resource link below: MyFitnessPal - this resource sometimes runs a free challenge to help support this and is a great tracker)

Week 4: Plan for next month- what other changes do you want to make- review the ideas below? Keep ongoing!!

Some other challenges for next month:

  1. Limit processed foods - no label, no problem

  2. Organic - no other chemicals on the label

  3. Clean up your products- is everything as “safe” as possible. Including your drinking water, your food, cleaning products, and your detergent?  read all your labels and work on cleaning them up one by one.

  4. Water- this helps with many things. It will flush your main organs :liver, kidneys and your intestines. It helps you feel full and eat less and it helps your skin look great by staying hydrated. Also its really hard to loose any weight without it

  5. No soda or alcohol (parents), we need to give that liver a break

Challenge yourself daily, weekly, or monthly, however often you feel you need to be reminded. I try to challenge myself monthly and reset and renew my goals every 3 months.  Put it on your calendar and hold yourself accountable.

I challenge you to:

  1. Try out different types of healthy eating options - They all work in different but similar ways ( less junk and a lot more vegetables) but what works and feels best for you? Basic detox looks a lot like the whole foods diet, vegetarian, vegan, Mediterranean, and keto - you’ll find that in the process you’ll find some new healthy recipes and you might just find one preference that sticks.

  2. Try out different exercises together with the family or alone. Kids are much more likely to stick to a plan with their parents and this leads to success for everyone. I highly encourage walking as a family to start. Bike rides are also great, hiking, running - accept a challenge and train together. Online workout classes together, family yoga and just stretching daily is a great start.

Kick off a great year and keep it going. Work on being healthy and start today!! Dr. B
