Welcome to Week 1 of Fit Family Fun! This week, we're kicking things off with a family health assessment. This assessment will help you understand where your family currently stands in terms of nutrition, physical activity, sleep, hydration, and screen time. By taking the time to assess your family's health together, you're taking the first step towards creating a healthier lifestyle for everyone. We're excited to see the positive changes you'll make as a family!
Assessing Your Family’s Health
Take time to reflect on your current habits and routines as a family. Use the following questions to guide a conversation with your loved ones, allowing everyone to share their thoughts. Be honest and open as you explore each area, and use this as a starting point to set meaningful goals for the rest of the program.
Nutrition: What kinds of meals do we typically eat? Are we getting a balance of nutritious foods, and how can we involve the whole family in healthier meal planning and preparation?
Physical Activity: How often do we move as a family? What types of activities do we enjoy doing together, and where could we add more movement to our routine?
Hydration: How much water does your family drink each day? Do you tend to choose water over sugary drinks?
Sleep & Rest: How many hours of sleep does each family member get on average? Do we feel well-rested in the morning? How do our daily routines impact our energy levels and overall well-being?
Emotional & Mental Well-Being: How do we support each other emotionally? Are there moments of stress or tension that we could manage better, and how can we create more calm in our daily lives?
Screen Time: How much time do we family spend in front of screens each day? Can we find ways to reduce screen time and be more active?
Analyzing Your Results
After completing the assessment, take some time to analyze the results using the information below. Identify areas where your family is doing well and areas where there is room for improvement. Use this information to set realistic goals and create a plan to achieve them.
-
Nutrition plays a crucial role in your family's health. A balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides essential nutrients for growth, development, and overall health. If your family's diet lacks variety or includes a lot of processed foods and sugary snacks, it may be a good idea to gradually introduce more whole foods into your meals.
-
Regular physical activity is important for everyone in the family. It helps improve cardiovascular health, build strong muscles and bones, and maintain a healthy weight. At least 150 minutes per week for adults and 60 minutes per day for kids is recommended. If your family is not meeting these recommendations, think about ways you can incorporate more movement into your daily routine, such as taking walks after dinner or playing active games together.
-
Staying hydrated is important for your family's health. Water helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, and flush out toxins. You and your family should be drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Children should drink their age in 8-ounce cups until they reach age 8. Children 8 and older should drink eight 8-ounce cups of water daily. If your family tends to choose sugary drinks over water, try keeping water easily accessible and make it a habit to drink water with meals and snacks.
-
Getting enough sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. Lack of sleep can affect mood, energy levels, and cognitive function. Creating a bedtime routine and ensuring everyone gets enough rest can have a positive impact on your family's health. Target 7-9 hours of sleep per night for adults, and more for children depending on their age.

Just as physical health is important, nurturing emotional and mental well-being is essential for a healthy family. Strong emotional bonds help build resilience, promote happiness, and create a supportive environment. If stress or tension is common in your household, consider introducing daily check-ins or practicing mindfulness activities, like breathing exercises or yoga, to encourage calm and communication. Encourage open dialogue about feelings, ensuring every family member feels heard and supported. Small steps, like creating a routine of gratitude or taking time to relax together, can foster a positive, emotionally healthy atmosphere for all.

Excessive screen time can have negative effects on your family's health. It can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, which is associated with obesity, poor sleep, and other health issues. Screen time should be limited to 1 hour for kids 2-12 years old, and 2 hours for teens and adults. If this is something your family struggles with, consider finding alternative activities to do together.
