Each week, take a little time to put what you’ve learned into practice as a family. These simple activities are designed to help you connect, reflect, and build skills you can use together in everyday moments.
Family Gratitude Jar, Kindness Challenge, & Reflection Night
What You’ll Need
✅ A jar, box, or bowl for collecting gratitude notes
✅ Small slips of paper or sticky notes
✅ Pens, pencils, or markers that everyone can easily access
✅ About 15–20 minutes near the end of the week for your family reflection night
How It Works
Step 1: Start the Gratitude Jar
Place the jar somewhere visible and easy for everyone to reach. Each day, invite every family member to write down one thing they’re grateful for, big or small, and add it to the jar. Keep it simple and low-pressure—something as ordinary as “the dog made me laugh” is worth noticing.
If anyone has trouble thinking of something, use one of these prompts to help get started:
What made you smile or laugh today?
Who did something kind or helpful for you today?
What is something you enjoyed doing today?
What is something that made today a little easier?
What is something you’re glad you got to see, hear, eat, or experience today?
What is one small thing you appreciated today?
Step 2: Take On a Kindness Challenge
Choose one small act of care that each family member can do for someone else in the household this week. It might be leaving a thoughtful note, helping with a chore that usually belongs to someone else, offering a compliment, or doing something small to make another person’s day a little easier. Keep it simple and doable. The goal is to practice showing care in small, everyday ways.
Step 3: Hold a Family Reflection Night
Near the end of the week, set aside a little time to gather together and open the gratitude jar. Take turns reading the notes aloud and reflecting on the moments your family noticed and appreciated throughout the week. Invite each person to share one act of kindness they gave or received and one moment or idea from this program that has stayed with them. Use the time to celebrate what you’ve practiced, learned, and experienced together.
Step 4: Celebrate Showing Up
Close the night by taking a moment to recognize what your family has done together. The celebration can be simple—a high five, a favorite dessert, or even just saying, “We did this together.” The goal is simply to acknowledge the time, effort, and care your family has put into showing up for one another.
Tips for Success
Keep gratitude entries short. A sentence or even a few words is plenty.
Let kids help choose the kindness challenge when possible. Having a say in what they do can make the activity feel more meaningful and engaging.
Be flexible with reflection night. If it doesn’t happen when you planned, simply find another time that works. What matters is making space to come together and reflect.
READY TO GIVE IT A TRY?
These resources can help your family bring this week’s activities to life. Use the Gratitude Jar guide to help you create your own jar and begin collecting moments of gratitude throughout the week. Then, when your family gathers for reflection night, try the Gratitude Meditation video as a gentle way to slow down, settle in, and begin your time together.
You don’t need to follow the activities exactly. Adapt them to fit your family, keep them simple, and focus on finding small ways to notice, appreciate, and connect with one another.
